‘Traditional’ Recipes
“Traditional” layered beer drinks use nitrogenated stouts (such as Guinness Draught, Beamish, and Murphy’s Stout) that float very well on top of other beers. [Be sure to also check out our 'Craft Beer' Layered Beer Recipes for carbonated layering.]
NOTE: When using bottled or canned stout, if you want it to float on top be sure it has a nitrogen cartridge (known as a widget). Guinness Draught in a can has one, but bottled Guinness is now all carbonated. Just remember:
If the widget’s not a player, then the Guinness will not layer.
